Edelbrock's Pontiac V8 intake manifolds for the street
Anyone have any favorite experiences and/or observations concerning aftermarket intake manifolds for use on 1965-up Pontiac V8s? It seems that the aftermarket lagged quite a bit behind the "Chevy Crowd" in offering any sort of a variety to us Poncho fans, but there is still quite a few good ones out there to pick from.
EDELBROCK PERFORMER
Probably the most popular and widely used aftermarket intake today when it comes to Pontiac power on the street. A good aluminum dual plane design that offers improved breathing ability over most stock units, with reduced weight to boot. For stock or relatively mild engines, this one is a no-brainer...a slam-dunk to better breathing!
EDELBROCK PERFORMER RPM
Like the Performer, this one is also a dual plane aluminum intake, but it's tuned to provide more power in the mid range. Coupled with headers, a good carb and a mild hydraulic camshaft, it's a dynamite performance upgrade. Can;t hardly miss with this one.
EDELBROCK TORKER
Pontiacs can be funny when it comes to single plane intake manifolds. Most "smog era" Ponchos have poorly designed heads that just don't flow well enough to take advantage of the higher rpm levels that most single plane manifolds are designed to enhance. However, this manifold DOES get the job done on engines with better heads, bigger cams, and in cars with looser stall converters, four speed transmissions and 3.55 or numerically higher rear axle ratios. If the entire package (engine, transmission, rear axle and chassis) are tailored to respond to a fast revving mill that pulls hard into the 6200rpm range, then the Torker will deliver the punch you're looking for. Put it on a tired 400 in your grandma's old 76 Catalina, and it'll be a dog. For the more serious street machine or weekend hot rod, though...the Torker makes a great choice.
EDELBROCK DUAL QUAD MANIFOLD
The folks at Edelbrock offer a low rise dual quad (two four barrel carburetors) intake manifold for 1965-up Pontiac V8s (excluding the 265 and 301). It is designed to accept two of their Edelbrock Performer series carburetors, and suprisingly...it works damn good on a mild to moderate street engine! A friend of mine has one of these set-ups on a 68 Firebird with a 400 engine, TH-400 automatic with TCI converter and 3.31 gears. It's strong right off idle on up to the 4800rpm shift point without any real "bog" off the line...a condition typical to dual quads on street engines.
The secret, of course, is in carburetor selection. He runs two of the 500cfm Edelbrock carbs with straight (not progressive) linkage. In truth, he has his throttle adjusted so that when the pedal is "floored", the carbs are really only at about 3/4 throttle...but that flows more than enough to feed mis motor. It's not the most efficient induction system, for sure...but it looks killer and runs better than either one of us had expected it to.
In today's market, Edelbrock is pretty much king when it comes to currently available aftermarket Pontiac manifolds, and their primary offerings fill the bill quite well. From the Performer for stock replacement or very mild applications, to the Performer RPM for hotter mills seeking a broad torque curve, to the Torker for serious dual duty (street/strip) vehicles, and on to the dual quad manifold for folks who want a little "eye cand" under the hood in a set-up that looks great yet still qualifies as very streetable when installed and tuned correctly. There is also the Victor Series intake manifold for all out race motors with aftermarket heads, but for the bulk of us, the four listed previously will fill our needs!
That said, I have a couple old Holley intakes that I've run with great success for years on Pontiac engines from a 326 Tempest to a 455 Firebird, and I love 'em! Unfortunately, I don't think that they are available new any longer, so Edelbrock leads the way with off-the-shelf performance manifolds for Pontiac people! That's not a bad thing, though...they appear to have done their homework and offer everything that we could really ever want in a bolt-on manifold...except for an aftermarket tri-power intake! How 'bout it Edelbrock...whaddaya say ya tool up a new aftermarket aluminum tri-power manifold for us? They offer one for Chevy small blocks...so why not us? It would be a great alternative to seeking out old factory tri-power manifolds at swap meets and on e-bay! Are ya listening, Edelbrock? Let's have it already!!
